Thurlby Motors was formed after a once in a lifetime opportunity presented itself to Chairman, Richard Walsh. After spotting an advert in the Daily Telegraph by American company General Motors, offering to sponsor aspiring managers to take on their own Vauxhall dealerships.

Richard and his former business partner Hilton Goddard, who at the time were managing a Vauxhall dealership in Derbyshire, approached the company and were given the green light, so they brought Thurlby Motors near Alford and headed for Lincolnshire in 1981. Having just got married, Richard and his new wife Wendy, along with Hilton and his young family, all travelled to Alford in one car. Richard recalls: "Wendy even pawned some earrings to buy us some food as we’d really stretched ourselves." "Initially, there were just ten members of staff at the site but now we have three sites and employ 105 people."

In that first year 20 cars were sold by 1st August. That number was raised to over 100 new vehicles by 1st August 1985. As a result of booming sales the business was able to repay the loan to General Motors. In 1996, the dealership expanded to Louth with a brand new showroom. A satellite operation – the first of it’s kind in the country – built on the town’s Industrial Estate.
In 2001, a dealership in Boston was added to the ever growing family after Vauxhall asked us to take on an even larger sales area. Recently, a large warehouse was built at Alford which allows us to display 100 used vehicles under cover. Customers can view our stock in a warm and dry environment, rather than a windswept forecourt (a particular issue in the UK!).

We hope to replicate this with similar warehouses at our Louth and Boston dealerships. Thurlby Motors now boasts a larger market area than any other Vauxhall dealer in the country and with more inward investment planned, each site will continue to grow. Thurlby Motors now employs 105 people across all sites.

Richard says "Our business has changed as much as the cars have over the years. We started off with mechanics but now they’re practically electrical engineers because so much of today’s cars are computer-controlled." "Despite all the changes, Thurlby Motors has retained it’s family feel. Once you’re a customer, we want to keep you as a customer. We still have customers from 1981."
